Sarangani Southern Philippines’ front door to BIMP-EAGA, is the southern most province in the mainland of Mindanao. It is cut midway by the city of General Santos giving its two sections hammock-like shapes that hug the mountains and Sarangani Bay.
Sarangani is surrounded by the Celebes Sea, Sarangani Bay, and the province of South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Davao del Sur.
The early inhabitants who first inhabited Sarangani were the indigenous natives, called "MunaTo," a native term for "first people." Before its inception in 1992, Sarangani was part of South Cotabato and held its title as the Third District of South Cotabato. The province was created by Republic Act No. 7228 on March 16, 1992, penned by the late Congressman, James L. Chiongbian.
His wife, Priscilla L. Chiongbian is the first Governor of Sarangani. They are known as the Father and Mother of Sarangani Province.
The modern political context for the existence of what is today the Province of Sarangani dates back during the American period when the colonial administration of the Muslim and Non-Muslim Tribes in the parts of Mindanao was established by the United States after the signing of the Paris Peace Treaty with Spain in 1898 and agreed to cede Spain’s colonial possessions of the Philippine Islands.
